Mary Bennett was the illegitimate daughter of Leonard Bennett ("William Metcalf" arrived VDL 1837 with parents Samuel & Esther & siblings) and Emma Higgins nee Thomas, (arrived "Sir Charles Napier" 1842 with parents John & Grace Thomas and siblings).
Mary's father Leonard Bennett (and two sons Joseph & Henry) drowned in 1867. Mary was admitted to the orphanage by her paternal aunt Jane Thompson (nee Bennett) in July 1868. Mary's two sisters, Esther aged 14 yrs and Jane aged 10 yrs were taken in by Jane Thompson and her daughter Esther Rapp.
