Thomas was born at 27 Lomas Street, Manchester, the second child of Ann Dunleavy (nee Scott) and Thomas Dunleavy on 12 February 1842. His father Thomas died as the result of an accident at Manchester on 26 May 1843. Thomas and his elder sister Margaret accompanied their mother Ann to VDL on the Angelina in 1844 and on arrival both children were admitted to St John's Orphanage.
Thomas adopted his step-fathers surname and became Thomas William Hill. He moved to South Australia and married Mary Ann Catherine Green at Port Wakefield on 12 July 1869. He and Mary Ann had ten children all bearing the middle name of Dunleavy. Thomas died at Parkside on the 17th March 1930.
His mother Ann remarried John Hill in 1848 and their eldest daughter Mary Ann my g.grandmother would have been a half sister to Thomas.
