Thomas is my great grandfather. Along with 3 of
his siblings, he spent time here. Both his parents were convicts, and
his father died of Traumatic Tetanus in June 1864. Soon after, his employer sent a letter supporting a call that the children be placed here due to the destitute nature of the family. Their mother insisted
all four of them be admitted, so they would all be together. Their ages ranged from 6 weeks old to 12 years old, Thomas being the eldest, and in the paperwork for his admission into the Queens
Orphanage, there is mention of the fact that he is old enough to draw a
wage.
He was already in the service of Mr Shoobridge. In 1865 he is admitted to the Orphanage 3 months after his brother Patrick. In 1874, aged 21, he married Elizabeth Ware. They have their
first 5 children while living in Hobart, and his profession is always
given as labourer. They move to Melbourne's inner suburbs, where they
have 6 more children, and his profession continues to be labourer. He
dies aged 55 in 1908, when my grandmother- his youngest child - is 6
years old.
