Mary Ann was born in England in 1848 and came with her mother Hannah Smith and seven other siblings on the Great Tasmania ship as bounty immigrants and arrived at Hobart Town Australia on 27 January 1857. On the 12 December 1857 she was admitted to the Queens Orphanage along with her sister Rosannah and brother Frederick, she was discharged into the care of her mother Hannah Smith (who married George Atchison on 5 January 1859),on the 10 May 1860. On 25 January 1873 she married John Henry Allan and had, as far as I can find out only one child, my grandfather Joseph Smith Allan. For reasons unknown, Joseph was given to Joseph and Emma Sophia Smith (I think they are relations of Mary Ann) for a period of about 12 months. Mary Ann and John Henry moved to Victoria along with Joseph. Joseph was then either given to or adopted by William (Mary Ann's brother) and Rebecca Smith to raise.
I found on Ancestry that Mary Ann died in 1903 at the age of 55 and her parents were James Smith and Hannah Churchill. She was buried at Footscray Cemetery along with John Henry. I found on the Trove website that John Henry died at his residence Apsley House, 1 Fairlie Street Yarraville on 14 April 1915.
Ancestry has Mary Ann's parents as James Smith and Hannah Churchill (nee Churchill), although later research has Mary Ann's, Rosannah's and Frederick's parents as Hannah Churchill and Joseph Smith. I am still researching into this.
