It appears that Joseph is the son of Eleanor BROWN who came out on the ship America in 1831. His sister Elizabeth Brown was also admitted to the Orphan School. Joseph was in the Female House of Correction with his mother and due to his age was admitted to the Orphan School with the aim of learning a trade. Joseph was admitted to the school the same day as two other boys who also accompanied their mother on the same ship. Joseph's age at entering the school puts his year of birth about 1820 back in England.
