Jane's parents are Patrick Cassin (Cashen) - Arrived per Ratcliffe, 1845; and Bridget Conway - free. Patrick was charged with desertion from the 5th of Foot Regiment in Belfast. After time served, Patrick was employed as a police constable, until he was charged with assault and sent to gaol. Bridget applied for her 5 young children to be admitted to the Orphan School, but was denied. She did receive financial aid to help her. After Patrick was released, they had another child (Harriet). The family then moved to Victoria by 1870. I still need to determine if Jane's eldest sister (Mary Ann) was born 1) prior to her parents arriving in Tasmania 2) on board the Ratcliffe, or 3) in Tasmania. I am also trying to find Patrick's death, as his details are often confused with another convict with the same name.
