Alexander's childhood must have been challenging. His mother, Mary Ann Sainsbury, was regularly before the courts on charges of assault, larceny and being drunk and disorderly.

Alexander married Sarah Mary Giles in 1882. At some stage, he moved to Melbourne, where he died in 1922.
