John was the youngest of many children.  When his parents and his brother were found guilty of stealing from an old lady, they were transported - father John Rankin and brother Henry Johnstone Rankine to Sydney and mother  Christian Stewart to Tasmania.  Young John went with his mother.  After 5 years Christian Stewart obtained a ticket-of-leave and they travelled to Sydney to father John Rankin who also had a ticket-of-leave. A sister had also travelled to Sydney from Scotland, probably bringing the family money.  The family set up in Kent street Sydney, buying land and building shacks to rent to newly arrived settlers.  John managed the family properties when his father was re-arrested for Accessory before the fact, and sent to Norfolk Island.  His mother was addicted to drink, and died soon after this.  I lost track of John from here, but he probably had a large family and a good life.
