Nancy Reader was born in Hobart on 2 Sep 1854 and was registered as Elizabeth Ann. By 1857, when she was admitted to the Orphan School, she was known as Nancy,a pet name for Ann. After leaving the Orphan School she worked as a domestic servant. On 27 Jan 1890 she married James Martin Haywood, a platelayer, at St Matthew’s Church, New Norfolk; at this time she gave her name as Agnes. They had one daughter born in Jan 1891 at Bridgewater. By 1895 Nancy was living in Danks Street, South Melbourne and was working as a laundress. She died on 3 Mar 1940 at the Castlemaine Benevolent Home (her name is given as Nancy Agnes here) and is buried at Fawkner Cemetery.
